Euan Lowe to Step Down as Scottish Swimming Chief Executive

Euan Lowe will step down from his position of Chief Executive of Scottish Swimming at the end of 2024, he announced on Thursday.

Lowe has led the organization since the summer of 2019, navigating it through the COVID-19 pandemic and the #SaveOurPools campaign to, “help secure long-term financial investment for our current swimming pool stock.”

Under Lowe’s watch, Scotland has contributed significantly to Great Britain’s tremendous generation of swimmers. Duncan Scott and Katie Shanahan are among the most notable, but Scotland won two gold medals (both Scott) and 12 total at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The latter total was fourth on the overall medal table, behind Australia, England and Canada.

“I don’t think there is really an ideal time to move on from an organisation and this is a decision reached based on life choices and opportunity, rather than a move to another role,” Lowe said in a press release. “In autumn this year we are coming up to a new 4-year investment cycle review with sportscotland. As one of our key supporters, it seems a sensible time to have this process completed and will also allow time for a thorough recruitment process and subsequent handover to take place.

“It has been a privilege to be part of such a dedicated, hard-working team, both office based and that of the many and varied volunteers, all of whom give so much of themselves in developing our sports. My sincere thanks to this remarkable aquatic family we have in Scotland, along with them and the backing of our many partners, supporters and sponsors, we have been able to make continued progress.”

Lowe’s work behind the scenes included a staff restructuring, the introduction of roles for a swimming pathway manager and a national aquatic sports manager and stronger links from the nation’s learn to swim curriculum up to the elite performance programs.

“Euan has done a terrific job in driving the organisation and our sports through a period of turmoil,” said Graeme Marchbank, the chair of the Scottish Swimming Board. “Indeed his tenure as Chief Executive of Scottish Swimming has also seen a number of notable achievements, including a successful Commonwealth Games; the development of new teaching and coaching qualifications; strengthening relationships with the Learn to Swim partners, our home countries and Aquatics GB partners; an extended long standing period of support from Scottish Water and we are heading towards membership levels higher than they were pre-Covid. While I will be sorry to see Euan leave, I wish him well in whichever opportunity comes his way, and I will look forward to working with a new CEO, when the time comes.”
