Erin Gemmell, Teagan O’Dell, Maximus Williamson, Aaron Shackell Highlight NISCA All-America Lists
NISCA has released its swimming and diving All-America lists for the 2022-23 to recognize the top 100 performers in each event from high school competitions only. The high school swimming season spans the entire school year as most states compete in swimming during the winter while several states swim in the fall and a few in the spring.
Four swimmers earned the No. 1 spot in two different events this year: Stone Ridge’s Erin Gemmell led the way in the women’s 100 and 200 freestyle while Santa Margarita’s Teagan O’Dell was in the top spot in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. On the men’s side, Aaron Shackell topped the 200 free and 500 free while Maximus Williamson was first in the 200 IM and 100 free.
Seven national records went down in high school competition this season. Carmel High School broke the national records in the 200 medley relay, with Berit Berglund, Molly Sweeney, Alex Shackell and Meghan Christman clocking 1:36.89, and later on in the 200 free relay, the team of Sweeney, Grace Dougherty, Christman and Shackell knocked off that national mark. However, that would not last long as Santa Margarita’s Teia Salvino, Asia Kozan, Gracyn Aquino and Teagan O’Dell went even faster later in the season.
In Indiana, Aaron Shackell took down the national record in the 200 free, and Will Modglin broke Ryan Murphy’s national record in the 100 back. Scotty Buff lowered the mark in the 100 fly, and in California, Rex Maurer (boys’ 500 free) and O’Dell (girls’ 200 IM) each got standards of their own.
