Emily Seebohm, Yulia Efimova Strong on Second Day of NSW Open Championships
Australia’s Emily Seebohm and Russia’s Yulia Efimova each posted a No. 1 time in the early 2017 world rankings during day two finals at the New South Wales Open Championships in Sydney, Australia.
Jessica Ashwood opened the session with a narrow victory over Kiah Melverton in the 400 free. Ashwood held off a charging 29.45 split from Melverton on the final 50 to get into the wall one one-hundredth ahead, 4:08.06 to 4:08.07. Olympian Leah Neale finished third in 4:12.12.

Japan’s Junya Koga added a 50 fly win to his 50 back title from the first day, touching in 24.11. David Morgan finished second (24.28) and Cameron Jones third (24.38).

Emma McKeon came from behind to get in front of South Korea’s Sehyeon An and win the women’s 100 fly, 58.02 to 58.11. Christina Licciardi came in third at 59.84.

Reigning World Champion Emily Seebohm put up a blistering time of 59.28 in her signature event, the women’s 100 back. That easily eclipsed Kylie Masse’s 59.60 as the top mark in the world so far this year. Taking second was Madison Wilson in 1:00.02, just off her now-fourth-ranked 59.97, and Kaylee McKeown was third in 1:00.60.

Australia’s Matthew Wilson improved to fourth in the world with a dominant victory in the men’s 100 breast, touching in 1:00.23. Japan’s Yu Hanaguruma took second in 1:01.75, just ahead of Russia’s Andrei Nikolaev (1:01.75).

Russia’s Yulia Efimova swam the fastest time in the world in the women’s 200 breast, posting a time of 2:23.17. That topped the 2:23.45 swum earlier by Japan’s Reona Aoki. Taylor McKeown took second in 2:24.96, moving into a tie for sixth in the world, and Georgia Bohl was third (2:26.22).

After posting the fastest time in the world in the 200 free a day earlier, Cameron McEvoy was back in the pool for the 200 free, and he won that event in 1:48.36, holding off a hard-charging Alexander Graham and Matthew Stanley at the end. Graham ended up finishing second in 1:48.62, and Stanley’s time of 1:48.76 was good enough for third.

Cate Campbell touched in 24.47, good for No. 2 in the world rankings behind Sarah Sjostrom (24.01), and Bronte Campbell took second in 24.60, good for fourth this year. In the final individual event of the day, Japan’s Hiromasa Fujimori finished first in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:00.47. James Traiforos touched out Japan’s Tomoya Takeuchi for second, 2:01.72 to 2:01.78.
