Duke Concludes Dual Meet Season With Wins Against Queens
Duke’s women and men competed at home against Queens Friday, with the women dominating the meet on the way to a 171.5-63.5 victory while the men squeaked out a 127-109 triumph against the visiting Royals.
The Duke team of Emily Lenihan, Sarah Foley, Aleyna Ozkan and Kyanh Truong finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.45. Molly Donlan grabbed Duke’s first individual win in the 200 freestyle (1:49.33), and she later won the 100 backstroke as well (53.61). Tatum Wall followed up with a first-place result in the 50 free (22.35) while Catherine Purnell topped the 400 IM (4:16.01).
Ozkan put up a solid mark of 52.67 in the 100 butterfly, and Yixuan Chang won the 500 free (4:52.81). Catherine Belyakov was the winner of the 100 breaststroke (1:01.18), and the 200 free relay went to the team of Wall, Truong, Foley and Ali Pfaff in 1:29.86. In diving, with no Queens divers in attendance but East Carolina sending competitors to Durham, Margo Omera placed first on 1-meter (334.50) and 3-meter (338.25).
Queens’ Sarah Lange was the only swimmer to crack 10:00 in the 1000 free (9:59.66), and Danielle Melilli won the 100 free in 49.07.
A tighter win for the Duke men began with JC Castrillon winning the 1000 free by more than 10 seconds (9:24.73) and Blake Johnson taking the top spot in the 200 free (1:37.03). Kalen Anbar clocked 3:54.73 for the win in the 400 IM, and David Chang earned a three-hundredth win in the 100 fly (48.23). Johnson’s second win of the day came in the 500 free (4:30.81) while Duke was the only team with divers competing, with Will McCollum winning on 1-meter (342.53) and Seamus Harding on 3-meter (384.30).
Queens had relay success on the men’s side, with Andreas Mars, Balazs Berecz, Connor Wang and Matej Dusa opening the meet by overtaking Duke for a 200 medley relay win (1:28.41) and concluding with a wire-to-wire effort in the 200 free relay behind Dusa, Daniel Meszaros, Nien Levy and Caden Fritz (1:20.25). Individually, Dusa blasted a mark of 19.57 in the 50 free while Maszaros toppoed the 100 free (44.80) and Fritz won the 100 back (48.04). Berecz topped the 100 back in 54.87.
