Drew Kibler Leads Carmel Boys to Indiana High School State Crown

After a prelims session that was so quick it featured a National High School record, the Indiana high school boys state swimming and diving championships continued today with the finals session.
Zionsville opened the meet with a National High School and state record setting 200 medley relay. The team of Tyler Harmon, Brock Brown, Andrew Schuler, and Jack Franzman posted a 1:29.44, two tenths faster than Chesterton’s 2014 mark.
Carmel’s Wyatt Davis, Stefano Batista, Brett Sherman, and Andrew Couchon finished second (1:30.46) and Carroll Fort Wayne’s Noah Yarian, Parker Bull, Jackson Kent, and Tristan DeWitt were third (1:32.78).

Drew Kibler did not quite have the speed he mustered last night. The Carmel junior still won the 200 freestyle in 1:33.79, a few tenths short of his National High School record. Franklin’s Jacob Destrampe claimed runner up honors in 1:37.91 and Zionsville’s Harmon finished third (1:40.09).

Franzman couldn’t replicate last night’s 50 freestyle state record but the junior still secured a state title in 20.00. Couchon was second (20.41) and HIGH’s Ethan Churilla finished third (20.74).

Richmond’s Isaac Khamis scored just tenths higher than Fishers’ Cole VanDevende on the one meter board. Khamis won the state title with 519.95 points while VanDevende was second with 519.40 points.

Zachary Cook of Greenfield Central was three tenths faster than Bloomington South’s Matthew Jerden in the 100 butterfly as the two finished in 48.60 and 48.97. Schuler touched third in 49.17.

Kibler did manage to lower his own state record in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 43.20, just faster than yesterday’s 43.25. Fransman also dropped from prelims, earning silver in 44.13. Carmel’s Andrew Couchon was third (45.27).

Lehman earned a second state crown in tonight’s 500 freestyle. The senior jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished control, finishing in 4:23.10. Wyatt Davis of Carmel was second with a 4:26.09. Destrampe was also under 4:30 with his third place time of 4:29.96.

The team from Carmel lowered their own prelims state record in the 200 freestyle relay. Couchon, Vaughan, Batista, and Kibler stopped the clock in 1:21.21, over a second faster than the 1:22.67 set yesterday. That time was just two tenths shy of the National High School record.
Chesterton’s Wesley Slaughter, Sam Kravitz, Declan Tharp, and Gary Kostbade were second (1:23.99) while Homestead’s Julian Norman, Scott Hodson, Riley Anderson, and Noah Dalton (1:25.53) completed the podium.

Freshman Davis was on the podium again, winning gold in the 100 backstroke in 48.43. He was followed by Harmon in 48.90 and Fort Wayne Snider’s Jacob Steele (49.37).

After losing his top seed in the 100 butterfly Jerden held on to win the 100 breaststroke. The senior touched in 54.66 well ahead of Chesterton’s Kostbade (55.48) and Zionsville’s Brown (55.80).

With the state championship already wrapped up several events earlier, Carmel’s squad of Kibler, Davis, Sherman, and Vaughan were still dominant in the 400 freestyle relay, touching in 3:00.06. Kibler took the relay out even faster than he swam individually in 43.02.
Zionsville’s Schuler, Barksdale, Harmon, and Franzman were second (3:02.88) and Northridge’s Lehman, Matthew Vancoppenolle, Bryce Brouillette, and Camden Koch finished third (3:06.68).

I had the pleasure of watching this meet yesterday, and these young men swam their hearts out as a TEAM! They swam for one another, for the rest of their TEAM, both boys and girls, in the stands, and for their friends and families. The energy and their talent is incredible!! Kibler is the real deal
