Grooms spent 24 years as the head coach of the Miners, leading them to 13 top-10 national finishes, including the 2008 runner-up award. The Miners were third in 2009 and fourth in 2007. Grooms was a 13-time conference coach of the year, six times in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and seven times the coach of the year at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships.

Grooms retired at the end of the 2022 season.
