Division III NCAA Preview: Which Conferences Send the Most Athletes to Nationals?

The 526 swimmers and divers qualified for next week’s 2019 NCAA Division III Championships represent 28 conferences.

The women’s qualifiers come from 27 conferences while the men represent only 23 organizations.

The UAA leads the way for both the men and the women with Emory, Chicago, NYU, and WashU all qualifying multiple relays and solid sized squads. For the women, the NESCAC follows, with seven of their 11 teams represented. On the men’s side, Denison and Kenyon’s large squads push the NCAC up to second, with the NESCAC just behind.

While there is no designated “Power Five” like in Division I, these numbers reveal a little bit about the depth of Division III’s conferences. The UAA, NESCAC, and NCAC are clearly the top three in both genders, while the SCIAC and NEWMAC are rounding out the top five for the women, yet for the men after the NEWMAC (carried by MIT), the numbers even out. The quality of conferences vary by sport, and the success of some conferences in swimming and diving on the national level can vary significantly by year.
