Diogo Ribeiro Rewriting The Record Books At The Portugal Open; Goes Inside 48 In 100 Free
Diogo Ribeiro continued his record-breaking form when he added the 100 free mark to the 50 he set on Thursday at the Portugal Open.
The 18-year-old split 22.73/25.28 en-route to a Portuguese standard of 48.01 in the 100 heats before returning in the evening to go inside 48 in 47.98 (22.85/25.13) for another rewriting of the record books.
It makes Ribeiro the first man inside 48 in 2023 although the trials season is just now getting under way and the rankings will no doubt be regularly changing.
That followed the 21.87 he did in the 50 prelims which sliced 0.05 from his previous best of 21.92 he swam en-route to the world junior title in Lima, Peru, last year.
As well as the 50 and 100 free, Ribeiro holds the national records in the 50 fly with his time of 22.96 a world junior record and 100 fly (51.61).
Miguel Nascimento – who won the 50 after Ribeiro’s prelim blast – was second over two lengths in 49.63 with Tiago Costa third in 50.17.
Ribeiro wasn’t the only one making Portuguese history with Francisca Martins going 56.25 for a new mark in the women’s 100 free.
That took 0.14 from the previous record of 56.39 that stood to Ana Rodriguez since 2019 with Rodriquez having lowered the 50 free mark to 25.25 on Thursday.
Joao Costa won the men’s 100 back in 54.50 with Maria Luiz Pessanha going 1:02.60 for the women’s title.
Ana Rodrigues won the women’s 100br in 1:09.07 with Francisco Quintas taking the men’s in 1:02.92.
