Destin Lasco Breaks 15-16 100 Backstroke NAG Record
16-year old Destin Lasco broke the National Age Group (NAG) record in the boys 15-16 100 yard backstroke on Friday. Swimming at the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships in York, PA, Lasco hit the wall in 45.93, breaking Michael Thomas’ 2014 NAG record of 46.55.
Out under record pace in 22.61, Lasco powered home in 23.35 to get past the old record by more than half a second. That time was also about 8-tenths faster than his seed time coming into the meet, and was not the 16-year old’s only big time drop from the weekend.
The Pleasantville Aquatics swimmer also posted a PB in the 200 back to finish close to Ryan Murphy’s NAG record in the 200 back, dropping 2-tenths from his seed to finish in 1:41.77. That was less than a second off of Murphy’s record of 1:40.90 from 2011, and his essential even split (50.69/51.08) shows there should be plenty of room to drop in the future.
Lasco also won the 100 breast (55.90), 400 IM (3:48.22), and the 100 free (44.22) and was also second in 500 free (4:26.79) after his NAG record in the 100 back. You can see real-time meet results from the 2018 Middle Atlantic Senior Championships here.
