The 2016 Arizona Division 1 High School Girls state title was decided by less than thirty points, and Desert Vista came out victorious over Chandler High.
The first event of the day went to Desert Vista’s Sydney Garvy, Emma Utagawa, Peyton Garvy, and Breanna Larchick as they claimed the 200yd medley to get their title hopes going. Pinnacle High got the silver and Chandler High picked up the bronze after having the lead going into the last leg.
Shae Nicolaisen of Desert Vista took the first individual event in the girls 200yd freestyle with a time of 1:49.96. Finishing only .05 behind her was McKenzee Gordon in a time of 1:50.01. Hayley Hill rounded out the top three with a 1:50.29.
Desert Vista did not have anyone in the A final of the 200yd IM opening the door for Xavier College Prep’s Kaitlyn McCoy who won with a 2:03.59. Second place went to Jaiyden Wolfe, and third went to Sydney Chun.
The girls splash and dash went to Boulder Creek’s Claire Grover in a blistering time of 22.92. The silver medal was awarded to Kristen Covello in a time of 23.61, and the bronze went to Olivia Grossklaus (23.88).
A quick turn around did not seem to affect Grossklaus as she returned to win the 100yd butterfly in a time of 55.42. Shae Nicolaisen finished behind her with a 56.22, and Gabby Lizzul was right on her heels with a 56.38.
The 100yd freestyle went to Highland’s Kyla Yetter in a time of 51.39. She was followed by Kristen Corvello (52.09) and then Kali Brown (52.28).
The longest event in the high school program went to Hamilton’s McKenzee Gordon in a swift 4:52.73. The 500 freestyle silver was picked up by Hayley Hill (4:55.85), and freshmen Kara Church earned the bronze with a solid time of 5:02.05.
Desert Vista came back on Hamilton High to win the 200yd freestyle relay 1:37.81 to 1:37.91. Boulder Creek rounded out the top three with a time of 1:39.23.
McCoy won her second event for the day in the 100yd backstroke with a time of 56.03. Silver went to freshmen Kalli Fama (56.48) and Nicole Falls got the last spot on the podium with a time of 57.73.

The last event of the day was the 400yd freestyle relay where Hamilton High broke up the potential Desert Vista relay sweep. They stopped the clock in a time of 3:32.20. Only .09 behind them was Chandler High. Desert Vista did get the bronze with a time of 3:34.36.
