Derek Maas Joins NYU Staff as Assistant Coach

Derek Maas has been hired as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s and women’s swimming teams. He will be assisting with on-deck coaching and recruitment.

A member of the men’s swimming and diving team during the 2023-24 season, Maas’ time at NYU was spectacular and filled with record-breaking accomplishments. He won three National Championships, four University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, and was named UAA Male Swimmer of the Year. His NCAA titles included victories in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley.

In total, Derek Maas earned seven All-America honors in helping lead the Violets to a best-ever fourth-place team finish at the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships.

Over the summer, Maas represented NYU at the Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis.

Currently studying at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine, Maas came to NYU after graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He spent his four years as a member of the Crimson Tide’s swimming team.

A 12-time All-American at Alabama who earned the NCAA Elite 90 Award, Maas set several program records, including the 200 IM (1:42:59) at the 2023 NCAA Division I Championships.

A native of Holland, Michigan, Maas was a multi-state champion for West Ottawa High School, leading the Panthers to the team title as a senior.
