Denver Proves Too Much For Utah in Dual

The University of Denver hosted the Utah Utes on Friday January 29 and topped both teams. The Utah men were clipped by a score of 159-141, while the women fell to Denver in a score of 185-115.

Men’s Meet:

The Utah men started off the meet strong with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. A team of Paul Ungur, Jack Burton, Kristian Kron, and Sean Bloore touched with a 1:30.79, just about a second behind the Denver team. The senior Kron then followed up with a second place finish in the 1000 free (9:26.21) and was followed by sophomore teammate Peter Kotson (9:37.25). The freshman Daniel McArthur had the Utes’ highest finish in the 200 free with fourth (1:42.46), while the sophomore Ungur was first in the 100 back (48.63).

Junior Keanu Interone’s 57.02 was good enough for second place in the 100 breast, while sophomore Ben Scott and junior Luis Macias Padilla were second and third in the 200 fly, going 1:51.72 and 1;52.01 respectively. The sophomore Bloore also grabbed a second place finish with a 21.01 in the 50 free. He followed up that performance with a third place finish in the 100 free (46.45). Kron and McArthur went on to take second and third in the 200 back with 1:48.43 and 1:51.43, respectively. Sophomore Ganem Tebet Baez was second in the 200 breast (2:05.89) and was followed by junior teammate Nolan Rogers for third (2:06.11). Koston posted a 4:35.69 in the 500, good enough for second place.

Ungur grabbed a second victory when he won the 100 fly (49.35) and was followed by a Kron’s victory in the 200 IM (1:51.99). McArthur was second in the event with a 1:52.79, while Rogers competed the sweep with a 1:53.23, good enough for third. A team of Ungur, Bloore, Kristian Almberg, and McArthur finished the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay (3:05.50).

Senior diver Jake Crayne was first on both boards, but the Utes ultimately fell to the Hilltoppers.

Women’s Meet:

The Utah women did not have quite as much success against Denver as the men did, but the effort was there, especially from the younger members of the team.

The meet began with a strong second place in the 200 medley relay from a team of Megan Kawaguchi, Genevieve Robertson, Jenna Marsh, and Gillian St. John (1:44.02). Sophomore Kat Wickam had the top finish in the 1000 free, her 10:46.98 good enough for fifth, while fellow sophomore Dorien Butter grabbed second in the 200 free (1:53.38). The sophomore Kawaguchi also nabbed a second place finish in the 100 back (56.14). The freshman Robertson was second in the 100 breast (1:04.14) and was followed by senior teammate Stina Colleou (1:04.91). Freshman Jordan Anderson and sophomore Isabella Kearns went 2-3 in the 200 fly, with 2:05.36 and 2:05.77, respectively.

The freshman Gillian St. John was the highest Ute in the 50 free, with a 23.91. St. John was then second in the 100 free (52.00), just four one-hundredths behind her teammate Butter (51.96). Kawaguchi grabbed another second place finish with her 2:04.88 in the 200 back, while Robertson took the win in the 200 breast (2:16.22). Anderson then posted the third fastest time in the 500 with a 5:08.34.

Freshman Darby Wayner was third in the 100 fly (57.97), while junior teammate Brianna Francis grabbed third in the 200 IM (2:06.34). A team of Jenna Marsh, St. John, Wayner, and Butter closed the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay (3:28.74). The junior diver Amanda Castillas was first on both boards, but the Utes ended up with the loss.
