Day 2: 1997 Pan Pacific Championships
FUKUOKA, Japan – Jenny Thompson collected her 14th and 15th career Pan Pacific gold medals as American swimmers won 5 of 8 events Monday. Australia added 3 more to the 5 golds it won on Sunday, tying the U.S. team at 8 gold medals overall after 2 days of competition. Thompson touched out world record-holder Le Jingyi of China by .04 seconds in the women’s 100m freestyle. Thompson won in 54.82 seconds, a meet record. Le finished in 54.86. Le is among only five swimmers China at the meet. Thompson also anchored the victorious U.S. team in the women’s 800m freestyle relay. Lindsay Benko, Ashley Whitney and Jamie Cail also swam in the quartet that edged Canada. The U.S. won in 8:07.82 seconds. The U.S. men’s team was victorious in the 800m freestyle relay beating Australia with a time of 7:13.99, a meet record and the second-fastest American time ever.
