Dara Torres Adds Bruno Darzi as Boston College Associate Head Coach

Bruno Darzi is the first hire for Dara Torres as the associate head coach at Boston College, the school announced Wednesday.

Darzi has spent more than three decades coaching, including with Torres as well as Olympians Vlad Polyakov of Kazakhstan and Arlene Semeco of Venezuela. He served as the coach of Uruguay at the 2019 Pan American Games and the 2019 World Junior Championships.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to have Bruno join our program as associate head coach,” Torres said in a university statement.  “He has over 25 years experience – 15 as a head coach – and I trained with Bruno for my sixth and final Olympic Trials.  There’s no way I would have accomplished what I did at 45 years old without his coaching and guidance. We both can’t wait to get the season going with this great group of Eagles’ swimmers.”

Darzi was most recently the coach director of USA Swimming’s Southern Zone, which oversees 15 LSCs across nine states. He was the general chair of Florida Gold Coast Swimming, a member of its board since 2014 and a member of USA Swimming’s LSC Development Committee.

Darzi has served since 2010 as the head coach of Coral Springs Swim Club. He was a five-time member of the Southern Zone Team Championships staff for FGC and was a member of the FGC All-Star coaching staff from 2004-08. He is a Level 5 certified coach by the American Swimming Coaches Association.

Darzi was a competitive swimmer in Brazil, where he graduated from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 2002. He’s a lifetime member of Brazil’s National Academy of Sports Medicine.

The head coaching job is the first for Torres, a five-time Olympian and the most decorated American female Olympic swimmer, who takes over a BC program that was suspended last year due to hazing.
