Danielle Huskisson, Kirill Abrosimov Win European Open Water 5K Races
The 2016 European Open Water Championships continued today in Hoorn, Netherlands with the men’s and women’s 5K.
After two women tied for gold in Sunday’s 10K, today’s action featured a decisive victory. Danielle Huskisson of Great Britain led the top three finishers under an hour. She finished in 59:46.1. Six seconds behind her was Germany’s Finnia Wunram in 59:52.4.
On her heels was third place finisher Sharon Van Rouwendaal. Representing the home country, her final time was 59:54.0. That bronze medal winning performance was an improvement from Sunday’s fourth place finish.
Russia’s Kirill Abrosimov had a stunning margin of victory, finishing in 54:34.3. Twenty seconds behind him was Federico Vanelli of Italy. Vanelli finished in 54:54.4, moving up two spots from his fourth place 10K.
In third was Great Britain’s Caleb Hughes. He clocked a 55:06.1, over 30 seconds behind the winner. Sunday’s 10K champion Ferry Weertman finished fifth. The results of today’s race were more spread out than the 10K.
