Daniel Wiffen became the sixth-fastest man over 1500 free in short-course history when he went 14:14.45 at the Scottish SC Nationals in Edinburgh.

It was an Irish record for the 21-year-old, who won 1500 silver for Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games while his split of 7:35.71 lowered his existing 800m mark.

It was the 10th-swiftest in history with only Florian Wellbrock, Gregorio Paltrinieri and Mykhailo Romanchuk have gone quicker in European waters.

Wiffen now heads the 2022 SC 1500 rankings and is second only to Logan Fontaine over 800 with the Frenchman having clocked 7:35.47.

The Larne swimmer broke Brendan Hyland’s 2019 Irish 400IM mark, lowering it from 4:12.13 to 4:11.05.
