Daniel Roy’s Meet Record Higlights Penultimate Night of 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals

The penultimate night of the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals featured a new meet record from Daniel Roy from King Aquatic Club in the men’s 200 breast, taking nearly a full second off of Reece Whitley’s meet record. There were also near misses of the meet records from Alex Zettle in the 200 free, Carson Foster in the 100 back and Magnolia Aquatic Club in the 800 free relay.
Other winners on the night were Easop Lee, Zoie Hartman and Isabelle Stadden on Friday night in East Meadow, New York.

Women’s 200 Free
North Baltimore’s Easop Lee came from fifth place to steal the 200 free win from the middle of the pool on Friday night at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow, New York. Lee won with a 2:00.08 using the only sub-30 second last 50 in the field. Lee finished ahead of Brea’s Kenisa Liu (2:00.34) and Lakeside’s Lauren Pitzer (2:00.39). Pitzer was the early leader through 150 meters and ended up fading to third.
Enfinity’s Oliva Carter (2:00.67), La Mirada Armada’s Taylor Ault (2:01.08), Pleasanton’s Miranda Heckman (2:01.16), Austin’s Dakota Luther (2:01.18) and Gator’s Isabel Ivey (2:02.47) also swam in the championship final.
Lee finished 20th at the recent World Championships in this event while representing South Korea with a 1:59.38. Liu finished her freshman season at UCLA and Pitzer is also already committed to Stanford.
Ironically, Lucie Nordmann won the B-final with a 2:00.01 and would have won the overall event with that time.

Men’s 200 Free
17-year-old Alex Zettle of Lakeside Aquatic Club in Texas won the 200 free for his second win of the meet at 1:49.13. Zettle won the 400 free last night and doubles up with a win in the 200 tonight at Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow. North Texas’ Jack LeVant (1:50.25) and Mason Manta Rays’ Carson Foster (1:50.44) finished second and third as those two have had multiple trips to the podium this week in New York.
Team Greenville’s Tal Davis (1:51.23), Irvine Nova’s Andrew Koustik (1:51.30), Nation’s Capital’s Lane Stone (1:51.76), Irvine Nova’s Owen Kao (1:52.45) and Nitro’s Shaine Casas (1:52.80).
Zettle will be headed to Texas and LeVant will be headed to Stanford in the fall of 2018.

Women’s 200 Breast
Zoie Hartman of Crow Canyon won her second race of the meet after winning the 100 breast on Tuesday. Hartman won the 200 breast on Friday night at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow with a 2:28.09. The 16-year-old finished two seconds ahead of her nearest competitor as Triton’s Claire Donan (2:30.21) and Texas Ford’s Rachel Ramey (2:30.25) finished second and third.
Ramey will be swimming at Florida this fall.
Chelsea Piers’ Kaki Christensen (2:32.29), Lake Erie’s Laura Goettler (2:32.62), Waves Bloomington’s Noelle Peplowski (2:34.30), Lakeside’s Emma Garfield (2:34.38) and Terrapins’ Emily Lo (2:35.87) also competed in the championship final.

Men’s 200 Breast
17-year-old Daniel Roy of King Aquatic Club won the 200 breast at the Speedo Junior Nationals in New York with a new meet record of 2:11.25. Roy wipes nearly a full second off of the meet record held by Reece Whitley of 2:12.17 from 2015. Roy split consistent 33’s throughout his race as he swam the second fastest time for a 17-18 year old. Roy sits behind only Kevin Cordes who went 2:10.92 in 2012. Roy is one of the top recruits in the class of 2018 and has not committed to a school yet.
Ridgefield’s AJ Bornstein (2:13.96) and Mason Manta Rays’ Jake Foster (2:14.34) finished second and third.
King’s Ethan Dang (2:15.13), Team Rebel’s AJ Pouch (2:15.98), Portland’s Josh Bottelberghe (2:16.37), Crimson’s Calvin Yang (2:16.51) and Team Rebel’s Zane Backes (2:22.06) also competed in the A-final.

15-year-old Isabelle Stadden of Fastjets in Minnesota won the 100 back title at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in New York with a 1:01.23 for the win. Stadden finished ahead of Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia (1:01.63) and Indiana freshman-to-be Grace Haskett (1:01.78).
Beach Cities’ Alexandra Crisera (1:01.88), Missoula’s Katharine Berkoff (1:01.93), SwimMAC’s Sinclair Larson (1:02.01), SwimMAC’s Julia Menkhaus (1:02.46) and Gator’s Isabel Ivey (1:04.33) also competed in the final.

Men’s 100 Back
15-year-old Carson Foster won his third event of the meet at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals with a victory in the 100 back at 55.61. The Mason Manta Ray swimmer already claimed wins in the 200 fly and the 200 back and now claims a third in the 100 back. Foster had a tight battle with Nitro’s Shaine Casas who finished second at 55.79. Katy’s Glen Cowand (56.19) finished in third place.
Academy Bullets’ Spencer Walker (56.62), Aquajets’ Jack Dahlgren (56.77), Nitro’s Isaac Gwin (57.26), Pacific’s Hayden Cornellison (57.31) and Fort Collins’ Danny Kovac (57.46) also competed in the championship final.
Cowand will be headed to Stanford in the fall while Walker has committed to Alabama and Dahlgren has committed to Missouri for the fall of 2018.

Women’s 800 Free Relay
Magnolia Aquatic Club closed out the penultimate night of action from the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals narrowly missing the meet record in the women’s 800 free relay. Lucie Nordmann (2:00.78), Monica Gumina (2:03.36), Kaitlynn Sims (2:04.38) and Lille Nordmann (2:02.12) swam an 8:10.64 to just miss the meet record of 8:10.13 held by York YMCA set in 2013.
York’s record with Courtney Harnish, Nicole Price, Emily Ilgenfritz and Meghan Small will live to see another day.
Austin Swim Club finished in second at 8:13.97 with Ella Collins (2:04.14), Diana Dunn (2:02.63), Kendall Shields (2:04.75) and Dakota Luther (2:02.45) in a tight race with SwimMAC Carolina who finished third at 8:15.34 with Sophie Lindner (2:03.94), Olwyn Bartis (2:03.21), Sinclair Larson (2:03.52) and Heidi Lowe (2:04.67).
Other fast splits by swimmers not in the top three were Easop Lee (2:00.82), Lauren Pitzer (2:01.74) and Kristen Romano (2:02.85).
Long Island (8:16.36), Lakeside Aquatic Club (8:17.05), Santa Clara (8:22.86), SwimMAC Carolina B (8:22.95) and North Baltimore (8:23.27) also placed in the top eight.
