Cseh Sets Second Mark as Four More Records Fall at Euro Juniors
GLASGOW, August 2. LASZLO Cseh, Hungary's rising young swim sensation, set his second European Junior record in two days of competition at the European Junior Championships in Glasgow. On a day in which Eastern European swimmers won eight of 11 events contested, four new Euro Junior marks were set.
Cseh, 18, clocked 1:58.99 to win the 200 meter backstroke by almost three full seconds. In the process, he carved three-tenths of a second off the standard set by compatriot Viktor Bodrogi.
Lithuania's Rimvydas Salcius, another 18 year-old, took four-tenths off the EJR in the 100 fly set by Ukraine's Andrei Serdinov, as he touched in 53.25. Serdinov briefly held the world record in the 100 fly during last month's World Championships.
In the prelims of the 400 free, only two of the eight qualifiers failed to break four minutes. Accordingly, they found themselves in lanes one and eight for the final. But that was no problem for Poland's Przemyslaw Stanczyk and Italy's Nicolas Cassio. The two battled for gold from the outside lanes, as the Pole won it in 3:51.71 to the Italian's 3:52.42, with both swimmers easily under Massi Rosolino's EJR of 3:52.96 set eight years ago.
Only one women's record fell tonight. Russia's Vasilisa Vladykina clocked 26.96 in the 50 fly, four-hundredths faster than the previous record set in 2001 by Israel's Vered Borochovski.
