17-year-old Ian Crocker set a new Olympic Trials record with a 52.82 in the 100 fly, breaking Matt Biondi's 1988 mark of 53.09. Crocker was just .06 shy of Neil Walker's American record. Walker, the second qualifier in the 50 free this morning, didn't swim the event.
Bryan Jones, 21, qualified second in 53.22. Tommy Hannan qualified third in 53.43. Dod Wales was fourth in 53.55, Matthew Pierce fifth in 53.72. Sixth was Matt Ulrickson in 53.89, seventh was John Hargis, who won this event at the last Olympic Trials, in a 53.92.
Eighth was Kevin Northup (54.10).
Rounding out the semi-final are: Adam Messner (54.11), Andy Haidinyak (54.18), Jeff Somensatto (54.30), a three-way tie of John Suchand, Jarod Schroeder and Jayme Cramer (54.53), Byron Davis (54.55) and Matt McDonald 54.68).
