LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 13. IN a release posted today, FINA announced the provisional suspension of Croatian Marko Strahija. According to the announcement, Strahija tested positive for hCG during an out-of-competition test taking place on Nov. 8, 2007.
hCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is a hormone produced by women during pregnancy. Its primary role is to help maintain progesterone during pregnancy.
From a performance enhancing standpoint, hCG is used along with anabolic steroid cycles to offset testicular shrinkage associated with the use of anabolic steroids.
Strahija's provisional suspension began on Dec. 12 and will run until the FINA Doping Panel can convene to make a final decision.
