COVID-19 Cancels College Competitions This Weekend: Florida State-Texas A&M and More

Several college meets have been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic this weekend.

Thursday’s meet between No. 18/RV Florida State and No. 22/24 Texas A&M has been canceled out of caution, due to the recent spike of COVID-19 around the country.

“We’re disappointed Texas A&M won’t be traveling,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “It would have been a great match-up but traveling safely is so tough right now. Hopefully we can schedule a dual next year.”

The Seminoles will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU on Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. (ET).

Meanwhile, The Penn State swimming and diving meet at Army on Friday, Jan. 7 has been cancelled due to positive COVID-19 results within the Nittany Lion program. The meet will not be rescheduled.

The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the broader community are of the utmost importance. Therefore, as part of the protocols established by the Big Ten Conference and Penn State Athletics medical staff, and in consultation with University, local and national officials and guidelines, individuals with a positive test have been put into isolation. In addition to isolation, contact tracing procedures have been implemented, which includes testing for those individuals who might have been exposed.

Also the Georgia Tech swimming and diving is currently in health and safety protocols. In accordance with these protocols, the team will not be traveling to its upcoming meet against Auburn on Saturday, Jan. 8.

The next meet for the Yellow Jackets is on Jan. 21 when they face Queens University of Charlotte at 2 p.m. at McAuley Aquatic. Admission to the event is free.

Also postponed is Saturday’s scheduled meet between rivals West Virginia and Pittsburgh, due to health and safety protocol issues within the Pitt program (per West Virginia’s press release). The schools will look to reschedule the Backyard Brawl later in the season.
