Coughlin Is Magnificent at Women’s NCAAs, Auburn Closes in on Title

by Phillip Whitten

AUSTIN, Texas, March 22. NATALIE Coughlin was crowned Queen of American swimming tonight, after an unprecedented display of awesome speed and unparalleled dominance.

The University of California sophomore swam the fastest 50 yard backstroke split in history, twice broke the American record in the 100 yard butterfly and then destroyed her own 100 yard backstroke mark, set just yesterday, with — are you ready for this? — a time of 49.97 seconds!

In the team race, Auburn lengthened its lead to 67 points over second-place Georgia, while pre-meet favorite, Stanford, moved ahead of Texas into third, 122 points behind the leaders.

Auburn seems to be rolling to the NCAA crown. If the Tigers win it will be their first title ever of any kind — NCAA or SEC — not only in swimming, but in any women's sport. An Auburn win will be huge back home!

At the end of Day Two, here's how the scoring looks:
1. Auburn 337 points
2. Georgia 270
3. Stanford 215
4. Arizona 207
5. Texas 202.5
6. USC 194.5
7. California 178
8. Florida 154
9. SMU 124
10. ASU 101

The Natalie Saga
But let's get back to Natalie. Had her deeds been done in days of yore, bards and poets would create songs that would have been sung throughout the known world. As it is, she has sent shock waves through the world of swimming, creating a tsunami that is sweeping everything before it.

To start her evening, Nat led off Cal's 200 yard medley relay with a backstroke split of 23.41 seconds!! — easily the fastest ever. Arizona's Beth Botsford, the 1996 100m backstroke Olympic champion, was second fastest at 25.19.

Two events later, she devastated her own 100 yard fly record of 50.57, set in prelims. Before today, Jenny Thompson owned the American record at 51.07, while Natalie had the NCAA mark at 51.18.

Splitting 23.40 at the 50, she stormed home to win in 50.01 seconds!!! (Note: all of these times are real. I am not making this up.)
As she lit up the scoreboard, there was a hush, then a collective groan resounded through the Texas Aquatic Center. That was followed by a prolonged standing ovation.

It seems strange that such an awesome performance elicited a groan, but I was among the groaners. She had come so very close to breaking the 50-second barrier–a barrier that had seemed unthinkable even a few years ago. Everyone in the packed stands had been cheering for Nat to dip under 50 seconds.

Apparently, except the Wonder Woman, herself. "I'm very happy," she said. " I never expected to break the 50-second barrier. I was just fired up by the relay."

Lost in the celebration over Natalie's incredible swim was Stanford's Shelly Ripple — second again — who gamely swam 51.50, making her the fifth fastest woman in history.

There was one race to go and Natalie saved the best for last.

Three events after the fly, Natalie was ready to rock again. this time she broke the 50-second barrier. For the 100 yard backstroke.

The California phenom simply left her very talented competitors thrashing in her wake, as she split 24.33 at the 50 and came back in 25.64 That adds up to 49.97!! Add it up yourself.

No other woman has ever gone under 52.40.

Natalie was so dominant, the ESPN cameras had to go to wide shots to keep her and the rest of the field in the same picture. Natalie's second 50 was 7-tenths faster than anyone else's first 50! how's that for dominance?

Indiana's Susan Woessner was second in 53.23, followed by Arizona's Botsford in 53.45.

The Rest of the Story
Lost in Nataliemania were some other superb swims.

Despite Nat's heroics, Stanford overtook Cal to win the medley relay in 1:37.79, an American record and two-hundredths off the NCAA mark. In a photo finish, Cal was second in 1:37.88 with Auburn third in 1:37.94.

Stanford's Tara Kirk split 26.96 for the 50 breast while Auburn's Laura Swander went 27.11 and Cal's Staciana Stitts clocked 27.31.

Stanford's Shelly Ripple had the fastest fly split, 23.33, while Texas' Sarah Wazenek was second swiftest at 23.61.

Auburn's Eileen Coparropa had the fastest freestyle split, 21.71. Texas' Erin Phenix swam 21.94–the only other sub-22 split.

Auburn coach Dave Marsh told Maggie Bowen before her 400 IM to swim hard the first 150 yards, then decide whether to go all-out for Summer Sanders' record or just go for the win. After all, she had two more events to swim.

At the 150, Bowen turned a tenth of a second behind SMU's Alenka Kejzar, then clearly decided to cruise. She "cruised" to a 4:04.69 performance, making her the second fastest woman in history, as she defeated Kejzar, ho swam a magnificent 4:06.70.

Arizona's Sarah Tolar placed second to SMU's Martina Moravcova in the 200 free her first two years in college. Last year she on the event. She wanted to go out a two-time winner.

Only six-tenths of a second separated Tolar, the top qualifier, from the eighth qualifier. It could be anyone's race.

It wasn't. It was Tolar's.

Swimming a perfectly paced first 150, Tolar split 50.93 at the 100 to take command from Georgia's Maritza Correia (51.12) who had led until then. She then threw in the fastest third 50 to lengthen her lead to almost a second on the rest of the field. She faded on the final 50, but had just enough left to fend off a fast-charging Stefanie Williams of Georgia. At the wall, it was Tolar 1:44.66, Williams 1:44.88.

Afterwards, Tolar said: "It feels awesome!"

Stanford's Tara Kirk was the favorite in the 100 breast. The only woman ever to crack 59 seconds (she set the American record at 58.68 at Pac-10s), she was the only woman here to break a minute in prelims.

Despite taking two tough final exams only two days ago, Captain Kirk was ready to go where no other woman had gone before. She never quite got to warp speed, but she managed to swim the second fastest swim in history, touching in 59.03.

Maggie Bowen was the surprise silver medalist at 59.94, adding 17 unexpected points to Auburn's total, while Alabama's Anne Poleska was
third in 1:00.08.

"The 100 breast is, like, my baby," said Kirk. "I am very happy with the win."

Olympians Blythe Hartley of USC (and Canada) and Houston's Yulia Pakhalina (Russia), went one-two in the one-meter springboard, just as they did yesterday in the 1-meter. Hartley won by a tiny margin, 212.95 to 212.75. Once again, Indiana's Sara Reiling was third (201.80).

Arizona won the 800 freestyle relay in the second-fastest time ever, 7:05.10–just over a second off the American record of 7:04.06 by Stanford ten years ago. Auburn (7:06.70) just touched out Georgia (7:06.77) for second, while Florida (7:07.85) was fourth. Stanford was eighth.

Arizona's Emily Mason had the fastest leadoff split, 1:46.14. Sarah Tolar proved her 200 win was well-deserved, anchoring in 1:43.83, the fastest split. Maggie Bowen was second fastest (1:44.36) while Georgia's Maritza Correia was third fastest (1:45.45).
