MAUI, Hawaii, August 29. There’s a high probability that USA’s Connor Green will take down the meet record in the men’s 200-meter backstroke tonight after he cruised through prelims at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

Australia’s Tamsin Cook put up the top time of the morning with a 4:12.38 in the final heat of qualifying. She’s the clear leader this morning, and had the top seed coming into today. The question is whether she can drop down to challenge Leah Smith’s meet record of 4:07.10 from 2012.
USA’s Courtney Harnish (4:13.15) and Madison Homovich (4:13.57) qualified second and third in prelims, while USA’s dancing queen Sierra Schmidt, known for rocking out to the walkout music behind the blocks before each start, took fourth in 4:14.04 and will be relegated to the B final due to the two-per-country rule.
Australia’s Sacha Downing (5th, 4:14.32), Japan’s Chinatsu Sato (6th, 4:14.85), Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison (7th, 4:15.42), Canada’s Sophia Saroukian (12th, 4:20.10) and Japan’s Miho Nakayama (13th, 4:20.14) also made the championship final with a truckload of other swimmers being bumped due to the two-per-country rule.

Men’s 400 free
For the second straight day, top-seed Townley Haas of the U.S. missed out on the A final due to the two-per-country rule. Swimming in a slower final heat, Haas finished third overall in 3:53.19, while USA’s Liam Egan (3:52.35) and Aidan Burns (3:52.51) pushed each other into the 3:52 range.
Yesterday, Haas wound up swimming the fastest time in the 100 free with a 49.55 out of the B final, and will be looking to do so again in the 400 free as the target is Nicholas Caldwell’s meet record of 3:50.51 from 2010.
Australia’s Jacob Hansford (3:57.26), Canada’s Tristan Cote (3:57.59), Japan’s Fuyu Yoshida (3:59.33), Canada’s Peter Brothers (3:59.67) and China’s Li Yongwei (4:00.64) will also compete in the championship heat due to the two-per-country rule.

Women’s 100 fly
A pair of swimmers cleared 1:00 this morning as Japan’s Suzuka Hasegawa (59.64) and Australia’s Christina Licciardi (59.90) look to be the favorites heading into the finale tonight. The two will look to down Noemie Thomas’ 2012 meet record of 58.68 set swimming for Canada.
USA’s Hannah Kukurugya (1:00.30) and Canada’s Jacomie Strydom (1:00.45) also made the finale, while USA’s Cassidy Bayer qualified fifth in 1:00.53.
USA’s Kara Kopcsco (1:00.70) and Ella Eastin (1:00.72) were bumped out of the finale due to the two-per country rule.
Japan’s Rikako Ikee (8th, 1:00.85), China’s Song Yutong (9th, 1:00.98) and Canada’s Lili Margitai (12th, 1:01.69) claimed the other spots in the A final.

Women’s 200 back
Japan had a strong outing this morning in the women’s 200-meter back with a 1-2-4 finish. Rika Yuhara (2:13.45) and Rio Shirai (2:13.53) made the championship heat as the top two seeds, while Natsumi Sakai will be bumped to the B final with a fourth-place 2:14.91 due to the two-per-country rule. Canada’s Danielle Hanus initially qualified third in 2:14.60 but was disqualified.
The big question tonight is whether the top seeds can drop enough time to challenge Sayaka Akase’s meet record of 2:09.68 set swimming for Japan in 2010.
Australia’s Monique Rae (5th, 2:14.97), Canada’s Mackenzie Glover (6th, 2:15.03), Korea’s Dalin Lee (7th, 2:15.17), USA’s Danielle Galyer (8th, 2:16.12), Australia’s Minna Atherton (9th, 2:18.16) and Canada’s Heather Lam (10th, 2:18.59) also will compete in the championship finale.

Men’s 200 back
USA’s Connor Green, who came into the meet with a 1:57.60 seed, cleared 2:00 this morning with a 1:59.19 as he heads into tonight as the top seed. There’s little doubt he’ll make a serious run at Jack Conger’s 2012 meet record of 1:57.20.
USA’s Corey Okubo qualified second in 2:01.74 with USA’s Curtis Ogren being relegated to the B final with a third-place 2:02.09 due to the two-per-country rule.
Canada’s Anders Klein (4th, 2:02.85), Australia’s Peter Mills (5th, 2:03.02), Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (6th, 2:03.87), Mexico’s Andy Song An (7th, 2:04.66), New Zealand’s Andrew Trembath (9th, 2:05.60) and Japan’s Juran Mizohata (12th, 2:08.10) will also battle for the meet title tonight.
