Colby Mefford Follows Brother’s Footsteps With Verbal to Cal
NEW COMMIT: The Golden Bears have picked up a new verbal commitment for Fall 2019, this time from Folsom, Calif. native Colby Mefford. His older brother, Bryce Mefford, is currently a sophomore at Cal. Like Bryce, Colby also specializes in backstroke and mid-distance freestyle.
Mefford does his club swimming with Sierra Marlins Swim Team where he has four U.S. Open standards. He capped off a strong summer season with four lifetime bests and a pair of finals appearances at Junior Nationals. He finished 20th in the 200 free at Juniors West last winter and won both backstroke events at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals in March.
Also representing Oak Ridge High School, Mefford is a five-time CIF State Championship finalist. The two-time NISCA All-American was the 100 back runner-up and earned the bronze in the 200 free during his junior season after finishing 15th and 14th, respectively, in those same events as a sophomore.
He told Swimming World:
“I chose Cal because it is a great school and it was the only place I could see myself going. I’m excited to train harder than ever and get to know my new brothers. Also it is kinda cool that my actual brother is on the team.”
His best times include:
- 100 free – 45.64
- 200 free – 1:37.28
- 50 back – 22.80
- 100 back – 48.95
- 200 back – 1:47.80
- 100 fly – 49.10
- 200 fly – 1:49.88
Mefford will join a strong training group when he suits up for the Bears at the start of the 2019-20 season. He would’ve scored in the C-final of the 200 free, 200 fly, 100 back and 200 back at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships where Cal earned their fifth conference title in program history.
