Cody Miller of the United States was pleased that he was able to go under 1:00 in the 100 breaststroke prelims at the FINA world championships, posting a 59.97 for 11th place going into tonight’s semfinals. It’s the first time he’s broken 1:00 in a prelim swim, but he knows that might not be good enough for a place in the top eight for finals.
“It’s going to be quick,” he said after his prelim swim. He’ll have world record holder Adam Peaty and 14 others in the semifinal to battle. Miller’s lifetime best is 59.51 from the Arena Pro Swim Series this past June, and he said the swim this morning gives him confidence that another personal best is in the works.
Swimming in the lane next to Peaty in the prelims was not intimidating, Miller said. He knew of Peaty’s opening speed and relied on his own ability to finish the race strong.
“It wasn’t a perfect swim, but it was good,” Miller said. “I tried to stick to my plan and go out as smooth as possible and stay with the pack. When you swim next to guys like (Peaty), you try to swim your own race.”
