Coaching Giant George Haines Has Stroke
By Phillip Whitten
July 23. GEORGE HAINES, selected by Swimming World as the greatest coach of the 20th century, has been stricken by a severe stroke.
His daughter, Kerry Haines Derr, said he is paralyzed on his right side and is unable to speak.
Haines coached scores of the greatest American swimmers of the 20th century including Mark Spitz, Don Schollander, Steve Clark, Chris Von saltza, Donna De Varona, and many others.
"We are going one day at a time at this point. He has an awareness of us and his condition and boy is he mad," said Derr.
Derr asks that Coach Haines friends and admirers send
"no flowers, just your prayers."
