Coaches Corner: Improving Breaststroke Timing With Simple Drills

Achieving proper breaststroke timing can be a difficult skill to master, especially when athletes are new to the stroke. However, there are several drills and approaches that can be followed to support athletes in their quest to improve at breaststroke. While it is helpful to understand the mechanics of the stroke, such as the pull and kick, breaststroke relies a great deal on feel.

Coach Andrew Sheaff, who has been a regular contributor to Coaches Corner, discusses ways to enhance breaststroke in the video below. Among the focal points are separating the pull and the kick and having the swimmer gain a feel for these different actions. Sheaff emphasizes that performing drills at a high speed is an excellent way of finding improvement and an understanding of the stroke.
