Claire Weinstein, Samuel Marsteiner Win Junior 5Ks at Open Water Championships
Claire Weinstein and Samuel Marsteiner won the girls and boys junior 5-kilometer races Saturday at the 2022 Open Water National Championships.
The races fell on Day 2 of the three-day event at Lynn Hall Beach Park in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. The top two finishers will take part in the 2022 World Junior Open Water Championships, Sept. 1-4 in Beau Vallon, Seychelles.
Weinstein led the whole way, pulling away late in a time of 1:06:08. Her time was more than a minute up on Abigail Miller of Mission Viejo Nadadores. Cher Patrick of Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club was third.
“It felt really good,” Weinstein said in a USA Swimming release. “It’s nice that we have (international_ trips since last year they were cancelled. It feels really good.”
Weinstein makes it two wins for Sandpipers of Nevada in two days, with Katie Grimes having won the women’s 10K race on Friday.
Marsteiner, just 14 years old, won the boys race in 1:02.40. The top 10 finishers were clustered within just two and a half minutes.
“It was a lot of fun,” Marsteiner said. “I haven’t swam in the ocean in a while, but I did do this meet last year as a 13-year-old. That was a learning experience that helped me a lot.”
Nathan Szobota of NOVA of Virginia surged in the final lap to finish second. William Seigel finished third.
