Claire Curzan, Leon Marchand Named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Month

Stanford’s Claire Curzan and Leon Marchand of Arizona State were named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Month for November.

USC diver Lina Sculti and Stanford’s Jack Ryan earned diver of the month honors. It’s the first month honor of the season.

Curzan was part of three winning, meet-relay records for the Cardinal at the NC State Invitational. She won 50 freestyle in 21.55 seconds in Raleigh and the 200 backstroke in 1:48.50. Both were meet records. She also finished second in the 100 butterfly in 49.93.

Marchand was one of the standouts of that same NC State Invitational. He won each time he touched the water, setting school records in the 200 fly (1:39.57) and 400 individual medley (3:33.65) in the process. The French Olympian also won the 200 IM (1:39.28) at the meet and was part of four victorious relays. The sophomore has won all 13 of his individual events this season, sweeping USC in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 IM in a dual meet.

Sculti swept both springboard events in a meet with Arizona State at the beginning of the month. The graduate transfer added runner-up results against Arizona that same weekend, then won the 1-meter title at the Trojan Diving Invitational.

Ryan, a sophomore, won the 3-meter event at the Texas Diving Invitational. He also finished third on 1-meter.

Other nominees for women’s swimmer of the month were Cal’s Emily Gantriis, Utah’s Summer Stanfield, Kaitlyn Dobler of USC and Washington State’s Emily Lundgren. Maria Papworth of Stanford, UCLA’s Zoe Jespersgaard and Holly Waxman of Utah were the runners-up of for diver of the month.

Leon McAlister of Stanford, Evan VanBrocklin of Utah and Chris O’Grady of USC were also nominated for men’s swimmer of the month. Ryan prevailed over Utah’s Ben Smyth and USC’s Shangfei Wang in balloting.
