City of Fort Lauderdale to Declare March 3 Sarah Sjostrom Day at ISHOF
On March 3, 2018 at 11:30 a.m., the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), One Hall of Fame Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., will honor Sarah Sjostrom, as the 2017 World Swimmer of the Year.
Sjostrom is traveling from her home country of Sweden to donate race-worn items from her historic 2017 swim season in which she broke an incredible six world records. The items will become a part of a World Swimmers of the Year exhibit.
In recognition of her accomplishments, the city of Fort Lauderdale will present Sjostrom with a document proclaiming March 3, 2018, as Sarah Sjostrom Day. Commissioner Dean Trantalis will be making the proclamation on behalf of the City.
Sarah will be available to the media after the presentation. Brent Rutemiller, the new CEO of ISHOF, will also be available to address the future of ISHOF and the upcoming induction ceremony, scheduled for the weekend of May 18-20, 2018, in Fort Lauderdale.
About Sarah Sjostrom
- Sarah Sjostrom is a gold, silver and bronze medalist from the 2016 Olympics, representing Sweden. In July of 2017, Sarah set two world records in the 50 and 100 freestyle and became the first woman to win four world titles in a single individual event – the 100 butterfly – at the 17th FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
- Three days after Budapest, Sarah broke two more swimming world records in the 50 and 100 SCM freestyle at the first stop of the World Cup Tour in Moscow on August 2-3, 2017.
- Sarah then traveled to Eindhoven, Netherlands, breaking two more world records on August 11-12, swimming the 50 and 100 SCM freestyle.
- Sarah set a total of six world records in one year and earned Swimming World Magazine’s Female Swimmer of the Year award on December 1t, 2017 for her accomplishments.

Brent Rutemiller became the Chief Executive Officer of ISHOF on November 1, 2017. He is owner and publisher of Swimming World Magazine and is overseeing the merging of both operations. He will be working with the City of Fort Lauderdale to reestablish Fort Lauderdale as the premier international destination for aquatic sports and the long-time headquarters for ISHOF.

This year’s Paragon Award recipients include: Frank Busch for competitive swimming, Dr. Ben Rubin for diving, Bob Corb for water polo, Jennifer Gray for synchronized swimming, David Bell for recreational swimming, and Jill White for water safety. Other ISHOF awards celebrated that night will include: The Buck Dawson Authors Award presented to Olympic Gold Medalist Anthony Ervin, author: “Chasing Water: Elegy of an Olympian;” the ISHOF Service Award: Gay DeMario; the Judge G. Harold Martin Award: Lana Whitehead; the Virginia Hunt Newman Award: Johnny Johnson; the John K. Williams, Jr. Adapted Aquatics Award: Kathy Bateman; and the Al Schoenfield Media Award will be presented to Bob Ingram.
