Chris Giuliano Wins 100 Free at Indy May Cup in 48.70

Chris Guiliano was within a second of his best time in winning the 100 freestyle at the Indy May Cup on Saturday night.

Guiliano went 48.70 at night to outduel Blake Pieroni by .04 seconds. Andrej Barna was third in 49.03, with Rafael Miroslaw rounding out the leading group in 49.09.

Guliano went 48.52 in the morning. That’s within reach of his best time of 47.98, set last summer at Phillips 66 Nationals to get him to Worlds. Guiliano also won the 50 free in Indianapolis this weekend. Guiliano’s morning time is a meet record, lowering the 2022 result of 50.67 set by Gavin Wight.

There was a lot of that during the weekend in Indy, a possible indication of the fast swimming to come in that city in less than a month’s time.

The meet record in the women’s 100 free, for instance, was set in 2022 by Kat Zenick at 55.92. Zenick went 55.87 on Saturday … and finished eighth, plus got beaten by three in the B final.

The win went to her Ohio State teammate Amy Fulmer, who went 54.87. She bested Indiana’s Kristina Paegle by .12. Gabi Albiero was third in 55.03, followed by Lindsay Flynn in 55.06.

Ayla Spitz went 2:11.64 to win the women’s 200 backstroke. That time is more than two seconds quicker than the meet record set in 2022 by Elyse Heiser.

Victoria Buerger was second in 2:12.26, followed by Charlotte Crush’s 2:12.67. Ellie Clarke went 2:12.57 from the B final after a rough morning swim for the 14-year-old.

Kai Van Westering trounced the meet mark in the men’s 200 back by more than three seconds in the picturesque winning time of 2:00.00. He was .91 up on Tommy Janton, with Jackson Millard third in 2:01.14.

Ryan Merani won the men’s 200 individual medley in 2:02.42, just edging out the Michigan duo of Colin Geer (2:02.79) and Eitan Ben-Shitrit (2:02.84). Devon Kitchel led a Michigan 1-2 in the women’s 200 IM, going 2:16.38 to Hannah Bellard’s 2:16.91.

Kayla Han won the women’s 1,500 free in 16:26.31. She just held off a monstrous time drop from Gwenyth Woodbury, who lopped 15 seconds off her best to take second in 16:26.34. Maya Geringer, the former meet record holder from 2022, was six seconds quicker to finish third in 16:33.24.

Teen Luke Whitlock set a best time in the 800 free by winning in 7:50.20, chopping nearly five seconds off. That edged the veteran duo of Charlie Clarke and Ilia Sibirtsev, who were second and third, respectively, in 8:00s.
