Men’s one-meter springboard and women’s synchronized ten-meter wrapped up last night in Gwangju at the FINA World Championships. The Chinese team earned two golds and a bronze medal on day three alone.

Yang Zongyuan won one of China’s gold medals. He started finals in third place, before soon dropping down to fifth and then seventh in the second and third rounds. Then, Yang’s last three dives all earned at 8s from the judges, and rocketed him into first place. His inward two-and-a-half pike (405B) alone earned him 86.7 points. Yang won by 20 points.

Second place was earned by Rommel Pacheco Marrufo from Mexico. In another incredible comeback, Marrufo entered finals in 12th place. His consistent performance in finals helped him move up 10 sports, and take home the silver medal.

Yang’s teammate Peng Jianfeng finished in third place.

During the women’s competition, the Chinese team scored another gold medal. Lu Wei and Zhang Jiaqi bested the silver medal team by 33 points. The young teammates are only 13 and 15 years old, respectively.

Mun Yee Leong and Pandelela Pamg from Malaysia came in second.

Americans Samantha Bromberg and Katrina Young earned a bronze medal, beating the Canadian team by less than a point. This is the second diving medal for the Americans at the World Championships. Sarah Bacon‘s silver medal yesterday was the first diving medal won by an American in 14 years.

Diving continues tomorrow with women’s synchronized three-meter springboard and men’s synchronized ten-meter platform.
