Chase Travis On Competing in Both 5K Races at Open Water Nationals (Video Interview)
Junior World Champion and Virginia Tech commit Chase Travis of the Nation’s Capital Swim Club was the USA Junior National Champion in the women’s 5K race at the 2019 Open Water National Championships. She later placed twelfth in the senior race, becoming the only swimmer to finish atop the ranks in all three events at these Championships.
Travis has become one of USA’s most consistent open water swimmers. This time around, she won the junior race by nineteen seconds. In a post-race interview, Travis explained her decision to compete in the Junior National event and the Senior event after placing ninth in the 10K. She was eighth among Americans in the Olympic distance.
“I think I swam pretty well. I think I did what I had to do to after yesterday’s 10K to prepare for this 5K today…I think it’s great what USA Swimming is doing with bringing juniors into the open water side so I always like to participate if I can.”
Chase Travis also took time to talk about her training leading up to the event, her recovery tips for a quick turnaround and missing out on the dolphins and stingrays throughout the races.
