Chase Travis, Dylan Becker Win 5K Open Water Junior National Titles
Chase Travis of NCAP Swim Club and Dylan Becker of Sandpipers of Nevada won the 5K junior national titles on Saturday at the 2019 US Open Water Nationals in Miami, Florida. Travis won the 5K women’s race and was hardly challenged during the hour-long race.
Travis won at 1:02:07.57 as she was nearly 20 full seconds ahead of Kathryn Grimes in second place (1:02:26.82). Grimes led a tight chase pack as she was by herself but there were three swimmers that all finished within two tenths of a second with each other. Anna Auld of East Coast Aquatic Club won that battle for third at 1:02:30.90 while Gulf Coast’s Cadence Fort (1:02:31.11) and Blue Dolfins’ Carlie Rose (1:02:31.17) placed fourth and fifth in the tight finish.
Lakeside’s Mackenzie Lanning (1:02:34.95) was sixth while South Florida’s Mallory Schleicher (1:02:47.57) was seventh and Sandpipers’ Paige Kuwata (1:02:48.98) was eighth.
The Sandpipers contingent had more to cheer about on Saturday at the Open Water Nationals in Miami as Dylan Becker won the men’s junior 5K with a time of 58:18.48. He was challenged late in the race by Joseph Tepper of Egg Harbor but he settled for second with a 58:21.07. The Sandpipers also had three boys finish in the top with Caleb Gould in third place at 58:33.02 and Dylan Gravley in fifth at 58:40.74. They also had Brice Barrieault finish in ninth place at 59:10.97.
Connor Hughes of the TAC Titans was fourth with a 58:40.06, finishing just ahead of Gravley of the Sandpipers at the last stroke.
Jared Carter (58:45.71), Jackson Carlile (58:57.41) and James Morrissey (59:09.17) also placed in the top eight for the men’s race.
