Chase Kalisz Withdraws from 200 IM at U.S. Nationals Due to Food Poisoning
One of the favorites in the men’s 200 individual medley at U.S. Nationals will not be among the contenders in the final after no-showing his prelims swim. Chase Kalisz, already on the World Championships team in the 400 IM, revealed shortly before the session that he would skip his second-best event because of food poisoning.
“It is with great disappointment that I have come down with food poisoning and will need to withdrawal (sic) from the rest of Nationals. My focus is on getting back to 100% health for the rest of the summer.”
Kalisz placed fourth in the 200 IM at last year’s World Championships in 1:56.21, and he would have surely been a medal contender this year in Fukuoka if he had come out of the event with one of the top-two times. However, Kalisz will race the 400 IM at Worlds after he finished second behind Carson Foster in a quick 4:08.22 Thursday evening. Kalisz currently ranks fourth in the world in that race for 2023.
Kalisz will be appearing at Worlds for the sixth time in his career, equaling the record for most appearances among Americans. Others with six separate Worlds teams include Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin, Ryan Lochte, Elizabeth Beisel, Nathan Adrian and Katie Ledecky.
Carson Foster, who joined Kalisz in the Worlds final of the 200 IM last year and earned the silver medal, will be the top seed for the final by a half-second after he clocked 1:58.56 in prelims.
