Charlotte Crush Clips NAG (13-14) In 100 Backstroke at Winter Juniors-East
The theme of the week at Winter Juniors has been National Age Group records, with numerous marks being set between the East meet in Greensboro and the West meet in Austin. Through the first two days of competition, the standards arrived in the 15-16 and 17-18 age groups, but Charlotte Crush brought the 13-14 category into the mix on Friday night.
Late in the session at the East Championships, Crush clocked 51.01 in the 100-yard backstroke to clip the previous NAG standard in the event. The former mark was set last year at 51.03 by Levenia Sim. In breaking the record, Crush claimed victory over Erika Pelaez, who registered a silver-medal swim of 51.62. Crush was out in 24.69 and came home in 26.32.
The boys’ 200 freestyle featured a stellar battle between Henry McFadden and Kaii Winkler, with McFadden emerging on top in 1:33.07. The 16-year-old Winkler was charging at the finish and took second place in 1:33.36, not far off the 15-16 NAG in the event, set earlier in the week at 1:33.07 by Maximus Williamson.
In the boys’ 100 backstroke, Texas recruit Will Modglin touched the wall in 45.01 to defeat Scotty Buff, who was timed in 45.72. In other action, titles in the 400 individual medley were claimed by Lilla Bognar (4:07.95) and Carter Lancaster (3:46.65), while victories in the 100 breaststroke went to Grace Rainey and Will Heck (53.66). Rainey led a pair of girls under the minute barrier, with her 59.71 holding up for the win over Katie Christopherson (59.91).
New Albany prevailed in the boys’ 200 freestyle relay, going 1:20.08.
