IRVINE, Calif., June 18. CHARLIE Schober has been named the Director of Aquatics at UC Irvine and with his new duties, he will relinquish the coaching duties
he has had with the Anteaters, announced UCI Athletics Director Dan Guerrero.
In his new position, Schober will oversee usage and maintenance of the Anteater Aquatics Complex, hire and supervise lifeguards, plus serve as the director for all UCI swim camps and clinics. He also will develop
fund-raising and marketing projects for the Anteater swimming and diving, and water polo programs. In addition, he will serve as the meet director for the Speedo Cup, the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, and other selected meets hosted by UCI.
Schober has served as UCI's head men's swimming coach for the past 22 years and has been the women's head coach for the last 18 seasons. During his Anteater tenure, he coached 36 Big West Conference individual champions.
"We are appreciative of Charlie's dedication to the student-athletes in UCI's swimming programs, and to the University, for the past 22 years," Guerrero said. "The coordination of our aquatics complex and related programs requires a full-time effort and we feel that Charlie is the best person for that position."
Guerrero also indicated that a nationwide search for a new coach will begin immediately.
