Halfway through the Ohio State-Virginia Tech two-day meet in Christiansburg, Va., the Buckeyes lead the Hokies in both the women’s and men’s meets. The Ohio State women are up 111.5 to 55.5, while the men lead a close meet 86 to 81.
Charlie Clark, a member of the U.S. team at this summer’s World Championships, was a winner for Ohio State on day one in the 500 freestyle, where he posted a mark of 4:22.72, ranking just outside the top-10 in the national rankings, while other Buckeye men to win events included Thomas Watkins in the 200 backstroke (1:44.04) and Chachi Gustafson in the 200 butterfly (1:48.64). James Ward, Ruslan Gaziev, Jack Burroughs and Alex Quach won a tight race in the 200 free relay in 1:19.13.
Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti recorded a mark of 1:45.70 for an easy win in the 200 IM, and AJ Pouch went 54.73 to take the 100 breaststroke. Youssef Ramadan held off Gaziev to win the 100 free, 43.42 to 43.58. Jacob Fisher won 3-meter diving (402.60), and the day concluded with Forest Webb, Coll Marti, Ramadan and William Koeppen winning the 400 medley relay in 3:10.67.
The top women’s swim of the day went to Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson, whose mark of 1:54.67 in the 200 back ranks third in the country behind Rhyan White and Isabelle Stadden, but the Hokies’ only other win came in the 100 free, where Carmen Weiler Sastre tied with OSU’s Amy Fulmer in 49.21. Fanni Gyurinovics came close to a Tech win in the 200 IM, but Felicia Pasadyn ran down Gyurinovics on the last 50 to take the win, 2:00.55 to 2:00.63.
Maya Geringer won the 500 free for Ohio State (4:54.65), and Josie Panitz went 1:00.48 to lead a 1-2-3 Buckeye finish in the 100 breast. Aislinn Walsh won the 200 fly (2:00.89) in another OSU sweep of the top three spots. In the 200 free relay, Fulmer, Katherine Zenick, Nyah Funderburke and Teresa Ivan took the win in 1:30.09, while Funderburke, Panitz, Zenick and Fulmer won the 400 medley relay (3:38.82).
