Celebrating 50th Wedding Anniversary, Mark Spitz and Wife, Suzy, Replicate Sports Illustrated Cover During ISHOF Visit
It’s been more than a half-century since Mark Spitz dazzled at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where he captured seven gold medals – all in world-record time. And earlier this month, Spitz and his wife, Suzy, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
This weekend, the Spitz family was in Fort Lauderdale, visiting the International Swimming Hall of Fame and attending the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup. While at ISHOF, Mark and Suzy had the opportunity to replicate a 1973 cover of Sports Illustrated that was published a week after they tied the knot. Call it one of those moments that defines ISHOF, which has captured the history of aquatic sports in many ways – including reliving past images.
At the 1972 Games, Spitz captured four individual gold medals and powered the United States to victory in all three relays. His solo triumphs arrived in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. Four years earlier, Spitz claimed four medals at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
While the image on the right shows the Spitzes replicating the Sports Illustrated cover shot, the image on the left shows Spitz acknowledging his Honor Swimmer panel from his 1977 induction into the Hall of Fame.
Really GRRRREAT😘
Love hearing more about Mark Spitz
7 golds but 7 WORLD RECORDS !!!
I love hearing they’ve been married FIFTY Years!
As good as Spitz was, he’d have been blown out of the water not only by Phelps, but Johnny Weissmuller. It would have been comparing a good light-heavyweight against a big, great heavyweight. But this isn’t meant to minimize Spitz and his accomplishments. In his time, he was the best. Probably could have beaten Esther Williams in a race. Unlike Esther, though, Mark has had a successful marriage. In the end, that counts for more.
