Catherine Meisner, Maura Fluehr Lead Penn State Sweep of Villanova

Catherine Meisner and Maura Fluehr won two individual events each as Penn State swept Villanova on Friday in a nonleague meet.

The women prevailed by a 196-100 score, while the men rolled to a 224-74 win.

Meisner went 1:49.81 to win the 200 freestyle, then posted a time of 51.37 seconds to edge teammate Marly Lough by a half-second in the 100 free. Julia Meisner added a win in the 400 individual medley in 4:25.03, a great race to edge teammate and 100 backstroke winner Abby Henderson.

Fluehr clocked in at 24.18 to win the 50 free, then went 56.66 to win the 100 butterfly.

Penn State won both relays, with Ellie Brandbergh, Margaret Markvardt and Cat Stanford on both squads. Markvardt won the 200 backstroke. Kylie Rydland won the 200 breaststroke and was second in the 100 breast. Morgan Jenny won the 1,000 free, Morgan Rinn took home the 200 fly and Morgan Moore claimed the 500 free. Kailey Koval won both diving events, the 3-meter in a 1-2 finish with teammate Charlize Beniquez.

Villanova’s lone win came from Maggie Kleinsmith, who went 1:04.72 to take home the 100 breast. She was second to Rydland in the 200 breast. Lainey Quinones was second in the 200 free and 50 free.

The Penn State men started with two consecutive 1-2-3 finishes. Victor Baganha’s time of 1:39.27 in the 200 free edged teammate Eduardo Cisternas by .2 seconds, with Mariano Lazzerini second. Cooper Morley followed by going 48.63 to lead a podium sweep in the 100 back.

Baganha won the 100 free in 45.42. He was on both winning relays with Morley, Lazzerini and Tylor Kim. Morley, who led off the winning 200 medley relay, won the 100 back ahead of teammate Jack Harvey, then the two flipped positions in the 200 back. Kim won the 50 free.

Hayden Elliott and Kevin Sullivan went 1-2 in both diving events. Ben Doyle (100 breast), Caden Davis (200 fly), Calvin Wise (200 breast), Zach Brewer (500 free), Matthew Bittner (100 fly) and Andrew Christensen (400 IM) each added wins.

Villanova’s lone win came in the 1,000 free via Charlie Hinckley. Patrick Casey was second in that event and in the 500 free.
