Carson Foster Drops a 4:14 400 IM To Break Michael Phelps NAG Record at Junior Pan Pacs
16-year-old Carson Foster did not break the meet record of 4:12.59 by Chase Kalisz from 2012, but did break the 15-16 NAG record in the 400 IM with a huge swim of 4:14.92. Foster broke the record that was a 4:15.20 by the legendary Michael Phelps from 2001.
The time was a huge drop for Foster who was a 4:21.10 from the 2017 Nationals. Foster had not swam the event at Nationals or Juniors in 2018, but would have been seventh at Nationals this summer with that time.
Foster is well ahead of second place Keiya Tamaru and Masayuki Otake from Japan at 4:20.23. The other American in the final will be Jake Foster (4:21.29) who was a little off his best time of 4:19.18. Jake is Carson’s older brother and will be the fourth seed for tonight’s final.
The older Foster finished just ahead of other American Ethan Heasley (4:21.35) who will swim in the B-Final. Budding star Gianluca Urlando would have qualified for the final but was disqualified.
Australia’s Brendon Smith (4:24.67), Se-Bom Lee (4:25.79), New Zealand’s Thomas Watkins (4:29.64) and China’s Cheng Long (4:30.62) also qualified for the final.
