Carson Foster Delivers Strong Marker in 400 IM as Olympic Trials Prep Continues
Since he was a high school star and one of the top recruits in the country, Carson Foster has been pegged as a future star for Team USA. He has already served in that role at the global level in the junior ranks. And this summer, with the Olympic Games scheduled for Tokyo, Foster might have the opportunity to emerge as a standout on the senior circuit.
With the United States Olympic Trials less than two months away, Foster turned in a strong performance on Friday night at the Texas Long-Course Kickoff. Contesting the 400-meter individual medley, the University of Texas freshman touched the wall in 4:13.79. He was followed in second place by his brother, Jake Foster, who posted a time of 4:17.04.
At this point in the season, Foster’s effort is a positive sign that a major performance is in the offing at the Olympic Trials. Foster is one of several leading contenders to represent the United States in Tokyo in the 400 medley, which is the opening event of the Olympic program. In Omaha, which will serve as the Trials host for a fourth time, Foster is expected to battle with event stalwarts Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland, among others.
On Friday night, Foster was out in 56.94 for the butterfly leg, split 1:03.89 for the backstroke and was 1:13.54 for the breaststroke. He closes the race with a freestyle split of 59.42.
