Carson Foster, Caspar Corbeau Light Up Pool Again as Texas Men Top Virginia
While the Texas and Virginia women engaged in a heated dual meet contest, the Longhorn men flexed their elite speed across all events in a win over the Cavaliers. Virginia’s men have become a top-10 program with some of the best sprinters in the country, but Texas was strong enough to win 104 to 75 despite swimming exhibition in the final two races of the meet.
Just like in the combined-gender contest between Texas and Virginia Friday night, the key performers for Eddie Reese’s Longhorns were junior Carson Foster and senior Caspar Corbeau. Texas won a hard-fought 400 medley relay with Foster (46.27), Corbeau (51.05), Cole Crane (46.96) and Danny Krueger (41.61) combining for a time of 3:05.89, four tenths quicker than the Virginia quartet of Jack Aikins, Noah Nichols, Josh Fong and Matt King (3:06.33) as King anchored in a blistering 41.41.
Later on, Foster won the 200 backstroke in 1:40.79, the top mark in the country this season and two seconds ahead of Aikins (1:42.90), while Corbeau also swam the nation’s top time nationally as he defeated Nichols in the 200 breaststroke 1:52.77 to 1:53.74.
Texas’ David Johnston won the 1000 freestyle in 8:46.06, with teammates Alec Enyeart and Sasha Lyubavski making it a Longhorn sweep, and Jake Foster, older brother of Carson, went 1:44.06 for the win in the 200 IM. Texas later got another 1-2-3 finish in the 200 butterfly with Crane (1:45.76) edging out Coby Carrozza (1:45.88) and Luke Hobson (1:45.99). In diving, Noah Duperre won 3-meter (393.98) and 1-meter (375.75).
Virginia got wins in the 100 free with King beating Krueger by four hundredths, 42.46 to 42.50, and in the final event of the meet, Matt Brownstead (19.77), King (19.15), Aikins (19.18) and August Lamb (19.07) swam a time of 1:17.17 in the 200 free relay, good for the best mark in the country so far this year.
