The University of Virginia has picked up a verbal commitment for the class of 2021. Caroline Gmelich will head to Charlottesville in the fall.
Gmelich swims for Central Jersey Aquatic Club. Her best times are:
- 50 Back 26.50
- 100 Back 55.25
- 200 Back 2:00.96
- 400 IM 4:26.32
- 200 IM 2:05.00
She goes to Trinity Hall and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. At the 2016 New Jersey High School state meet Gmelich finished second in the 100 back (55.78) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:06.90). Then in March she was a three event finalist at the Speedo Sectionals in Ithaca.
Gmelich is still a bit outside ACC scoring range. With a change of environment, she could move into the sub two minute range it took to make finals in the 200 backstroke at last year’s ACC championships. Megan Moroney (1:52.65) will be the returner leading the Wahoo’s backstroke group after the graduation of Conference Champion Courtney Bartholomew.
