INDIANAPOLIS – It wasn’t as dominating as the girl’s meet two weeks prior, but the result was the same: Carmel atop the team standings. The Greyhounds from Carmel managed to use their impressive depth to win the 2015 IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Championship in Indianapolis Saturday in front of runner-up Zionsville High School 253.50-176.

The individual star of the day was Bloomington South senior Ian Finnerty. The senior headed to Indiana in the fall set the state record on his way to winning the 100 breaststroke at 53.19 after setting it prelims Friday night at 53.23. Finnerty also won the 200 IM at 1:45.71 as the second fastest swimmer in Indiana High School history behind 2010 graduate Kyle Whitaker.

The other two-event winner on the day was Zionsville senior Kyle DeCoursey. The senior headed to Tennessee in the fall set the state record Friday night in the 50 free at 20.08, and won the event Saturday at 20.30. DeCoursey later won the 100 free at 44.70 after going 44.26 in prelims. DeCoursey finished the day by anchoring the victorious 400 free relay team with a 44.02 that finished at 3:03.55 that clinched a second-place team finish for Zionsville. The other members for Zionsville’s winning relay were Andrew Schuler, Cameron Gelwicks, and Tyler Harmon. Coming in second in that relay was Brownsburg at 3:05.74 touching out Avon at 3:05.75.

Carmel had only won one event on the day and it was the 200 Medley Relay. Gabriel Whitaker, Charles Vaughan, Nathaniel Bledsoe, and Troy Li took home the relay winning in 1:32.30 in a very close and exciting race. Zionsville finished second with a blazing anchor leg from DeCoursey in 19.53, finishing just .09 seconds behind, while Avon finished in third with a 1:32.51.

In arguably the biggest upset of the day, Brownsburg won the 200 Free Relay ahead of Carmel thanks to a spectacular anchor leg by Junior Vince Partlow at 20.74. The other members of the relay were Jack Franzman, Cameron Howard, and Kyle Baney touching at 1:24.20, just off the 21-year-old record of 1:23.75. Carmel was second at 1:24.62 and Penn was third at 1:24.84.

Other event winners were Arizona commit Parks Jones in the 200 free (1:37.81), Junior Gabriel Swardson in the 100 fly (49.14), Freshman Michael Brinegar in the 500 (4:24.92), and Indiana commit Wilson Beckman in the 100 back (49.21). Purdue commit Joe Young took home the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award after finishing second in the 100 back (49.25) and 200 IM (1:49.08) and leading his team to a seventh place finish.
