NEW COMMIT: Indiana University has gained a new in-state verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Carmel, Ind. sprinter and current high school junior Avery Williams.

Williams swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club under head coach Chris Plumb and owns the U.S. Open standard in the 50m free. She most recently competed at Indianapolis Speedo Sectionals where she achieved five best times with her highest finish being a 20th-place showing in the 50m free. This past summer, she raced three events at Cary Futures after a strong showing at Indiana LCM Seniors.

Also competing for Carmel High School, Williams is a two-time Indiana State Championship finalist. She placed fifth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free during her junior season to help her team earn their 33rd-consecutive state title.

She told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at Indiana University! Thank you to everyone who has been there for me along the way! #gohoosiers”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.44
  • 100 free – 51.21
  • 200 free – 1:52.17
  • 100 fly – 56.14

When she arrives in Bloomington as a member of the class of 2024, Williams will add valuable depth to the Hoosiers’ sprint training group. Although she’s just outside of scoring range at the Big Ten Championships, she has well over a year to go before suiting up for Indiana and has continuously made improvements each season.
