Canadian National Teamer Kyla Leibel Commits to Texas Longhorns
NEW COMMIT: The Texas Longhorns have gained a new verbal commitment for the upcoming 2019-20 season from Red Deer, Alberta sprinter Kyla Leibel.
Leibel swims year-round with Red Deer Catalina Swim Club under head coach Lucien Zucchi. At the Canadian Swimming Championships last April, Leibel had stellar performances: she placed second in both the 50m/100m free, fourth in the 200m free, fifth in the 50m fly and sixth in the 100m fly. Those impressive swims secured her spot on Canada’s National Team, where she then went on to place seventh in the B-final of the 50m/200m free and the 100m fly at Pan-Pacs last summer. She also represented Team Canada at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
She told Swimming World:
“I am honoured to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Texas! I was blown away by their amazing coaching staff and fell in love with the teams family environment. I am so excited to contribute to such an outstanding team and better myself by training beside such a powerful group of girls. Hook em!”
In LCM, her best times include:
- 50m free – 25.43
- 100m free – 55.37
- 200m free – 1:59.58
- 50m fly – 27.30
- 100m fly – 1:00.75
In SCY, those times convert to:
- 50 free – 22.18
- 100 free – 48.44
- 200 free – 1:44.84
- 50 fly – 23.96
- 100 fly – 53.46
Leibel will make an immediate impact when she arrives in Austin as a member of the class of 2023 and will add some serious depth to the Longhorns’ sprint squad.
