Campbell Sisters Lead 100 Free in Prelims of 2015 FINA World Cup Beijing
The Campbell sisters rocketed to the top of prelims in the women’s 100-meter free qualifying first and second for tonight’s finals heat. Younger sister Bronte Campbell finished first overall with a time of 54.58, while older sister Cate Campbell clocked a 54.76 to finish second from the same heat. Missy Franklin was third overall with a qualifying time of 55.16.
Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson continued to show her prowess in the sprint breaststroke events with a top qualifying finish in the 50. Atkinson turned in a sizzling 31.50 for the top seed. Micah Lawrence of the USA grabbed third in the event with a 32.01.
Cameron Van Der Burgh, the current men’s points leader for the World Cup, grabbed third in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:02.05. Yan Zibei of China (1:01.93) and Zhang Zhihao (1:01.97) finished first and second respectively in the event.
Tonight’s finals of the women’s 100-meter back will feature a dynamic race to the finish. Australia’s Emily Seebohm leads the heat with a qualifying time of 1:01.23 and is followed by Franklin (1:01.50) and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (1:01.81). With only .58 seconds separating their qualifying times it could be anybody’s race.
Hosszu grabbed another top finish in the women’s 400-meter free posting a time of 4:24.02 to qualify for the second-place seed. Lisa Zaiser (4:22.77) and Chen Yuxi (4:24.38) qualified first and third respectively.
