Campbell Camels Open Up With Defending CCSA Champ Liberty

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina, September 25. CAMPBELL opens the 2014-15 swimming season with the first of four home dates this Friday, Sept. 26, hosting defending Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association champion Liberty at the Johnson Aquatic Center at 5 p.m.

The Camels are coming off their best season to date, going 11-3 overall in dual meet competition in 2013-14, while breaking 17 school records.

Campbell wrapped up 2013-14 competition in the CSCAA Collegiate Classic National Invitational, the team’s first postseason appearance, breaking seven new school records and taking fifth in the postseason event.

The Camels also achieved Scholar All-American status from the CSCAA. 16 Camels recorded an individual GPA of 3.0 or better for the fall 2013 semester, with senior Maggie Pogue leading the way with a perfect 4.0. Nine registered a 3.5 or better GPA.

The Camels broke nine school records at the CCSA Championships, with senior Kylie Warne earning All-CCSA honors in the 1,650 free, 200 IM and 400 IM. Campbell returns 15 letterwinners from last season’s squad, including seniors Meredith Cooper, Larissa Joassaint, Chelsea Lawson, Sydney Postmus and Sarah Walker. The 2014-15 Camels also welcome nine newcomers to the fold.

The Flames won their first-ever CCSA Championship last season. Liberty defeated five-time defending CCSA meet champion Florida Gulf Coast by 14 points (732.5 to 718.5).

Liberty features 12 newcomers, with 11 freshmen and one transfer comprising nearly half of its 25-person roster. The Flames’ group of returners is highlighted by six CCSA individual medalists, and two additional swimmers who competed on medal-winning relays at the conference championship meet last year.

After the season opening meet, the Camels will head to the North Carolina Collegiate Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C. on Friday, Oct. 3.
