With Australia’s National Championships and World Championship Trials just over a month away, several top Australian swimmers are swimming one of their final tune-up meets at the New South Wales Open Championships, being held at the Olympic pool in Sydney.

Olympic gold medalists Mack Horton, Emily Seebohm and Cate Campbell all picked up victories on night one, and the times by Seebohm, Campbell, Cameron McEvoy and Junya Koga all rank tops in the world so far in 2017. Meanwhile, Yulia Efimova’s 100 breast ranks second in the world.

Seebohm won again in the women’s 200 back, but she had to work hard on the last 50 to catch up with 19-year-old Sian Whitakker, who had a huge lead with 50 meters to go. But Seebohm, as she did on the way to a World title in the event in 2015, finished like a rocket on the last 50 with a 30.79 split, and she needed every bit of that to touch out Whittaker, 2:08.77 to 2:08.79.

15-year-old Kaylee McKeown finished third in 2:09.18. Those three times mark the three fastest so far in 2017.
